What is a Free Economic Zone?

• A Free Economic Zone is a designated area under the “Special Act on Designation and Management of Free Economic Zones,” where exceptional measures for economic activities are permitted in order to improve the business environment for foreign-invested companies and the living conditions of foreign residents.
  • It was launched as a key project of the Korean government’s initiative to establish Korea as a “Northeast Asia business hub,” aimed at finding new growth opportunities for the Korean economy amid the rapid rise of China since the 1990s and the technological superiority of Japan.
  • The goal is to strengthen national competitiveness and promote balanced regional development by expanding logistics infrastructure in areas with globally competitive airports and seaports, developing advanced industrial complexes, and improving the business environment for foreign investors.

What is Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone?

• Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone (GGFEZ) is located at the center of the Korean west coast economic belt and is being developed into specialized districts centered around Pyeongtaek Port: the Poseung (BIX) District and Hyeondeok District in Pyeongtaek for advanced industries, logistics, and distribution; the Baegot District in Siheung for R&D in land, sea, and air unmanned mobility as well as medical and bio industries; and the Ansan Science Valley District for advanced robotics and manufacturing.
